The short answer
Lab grown and natural diamonds are the same material, and the same laboratories grade them against the same scale. A lab grown stone of matching size and quality costs substantially less, which is why someone choosing an engagement ring on a fixed budget usually ends up with a larger or better stone by going lab grown. Natural diamonds hold their resale value more reliably. Neither is a compromise, and the certificate is what tells you which one you are holding.
What is a lab grown diamond?
A lab grown diamond is grown in a controlled environment using one of two processes: HPHT (High Pressure, High Temperature) or CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition).
HPHT recreates the conditions found deep underground: a small diamond seed is placed with a carbon source and exposed to extreme heat (around 1,500Β°C) and pressure (over 1.5 million pounds per square inch) until carbon atoms bond to the seed and grow a larger crystal.
CVD works differently. A diamond seed is placed in a sealed chamber filled with carbon-rich gas. The gas is heated until the carbon atoms separate and settle onto the seed layer by layer, gradually building up a crystal. CVD is the more common method for gem-quality stones today because it allows for more control over color and clarity.
Either process typically takes a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on the target size and quality.
What is a natural diamond?
A natural diamond forms underground under intense heat and pressure over one to three billion years, then gets carried closer to the surface through volcanic activity. It's mined, cut, and polished from there. The formation process is the same physics as HPHT, just on a geological timescale instead of a laboratory one.
Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond?
Yes. A lab grown diamond has the same chemical composition (pure carbon), the same crystal structure, and the same physical properties as a natural diamond, including its 10/10 hardness on the Mohs scale. Gemological labs like GIA and IGI grade lab grown diamonds using the same 4Cs standard (cut, color, clarity, carat) used for natural stones. The only meaningful difference is origin, not composition.
A diamond simulant, like cubic zirconia or moissanite, is a different thing entirely. Those are different materials designed to look like diamond. Lab grown diamonds are not simulants; they're chemically identical to natural diamonds.

Can you tell them apart by looking?
Not with the naked eye, and not usually with a standard jeweler's loupe either. Distinguishing lab grown from natural requires specialized equipment that checks for trace growth patterns and inclusions specific to each formation process. This is exactly why certification matters: a GIA or IGI report will state clearly whether a diamond is natural or laboratory-grown.
How to read a diamond certificate
Every certified diamond comes with a report from a grading lab, most commonly GIA (Gemological Institute of America) or IGI (International Gemological Institute). Here's what to look for:
- Origin statement: Clearly states whether the stone is natural or laboratory-grown.
- Carat weight: The precise weight, to the hundredth of a carat.
- Color grade: A letter grade from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown) for standard white diamonds.
- Clarity grade: A scale from Flawless (FL) down through Included (I1-I3), describing internal and surface characteristics.
- Cut grade: How well the stone's proportions and finish allow it to reflect light, rated Excellent to Poor.
- Certificate number: A unique number you can usually verify directly on the issuing lab's website.

Why is there such a big price difference?
Lab grown diamonds generally cost substantially less than natural diamonds of comparable size, cut, color, and clarity. The reason is supply. Natural diamonds are finite, and the mining, sorting, and distribution chain behind them is long and expensive. Lab grown diamonds are manufactured, and as production capacity has scaled up dramatically since around 2018, costs have fallen accordingly.
One practical effect of this: someone shopping for an engagement ring on a fixed budget often finds that choosing lab grown lets them move up meaningfully in carat weight or quality grade, rather than compromising on one to afford the other.
It is also why we let you choose the stone and the setting separately instead of selling finished rings at fixed prices. A store has to sell what is already in the case. Nothing we make exists until you have chosen both halves of it, so your budget goes where you want it rather than into a combination somebody else assembled.
Why do prices vary so much between retailers?
This is one of the most confusing parts of diamond shopping. You can find two stones with identical certificates, same carat, same color, same clarity, same cut grade, from the same grading lab, priced very differently at two different retailers. That difference usually has nothing to do with the diamond itself.
A few things drive it:
- Sourcing model: Retailers who hold large physical inventory have to finance that inventory, and the cost gets built into the price. Retailers who source stones directly as orders come in carry far less of that overhead.
- Markup structure: Traditional jewelry retail markups have historically been steep, in part to cover showroom space, staffing, and slow inventory turnover.
- Overhead: Physical storefronts, especially in high-rent retail districts, carry costs that get passed along to the customer.
- Middlemen: The more hands a stone passes through between the cutter and you, the more margin gets layered on.
The practical takeaway: when you're comparing diamonds, compare certificates rather than prices alone.

Do they hold value the same way?
This is where the two differ most. Natural diamonds have an established resale and secondary market, though like most jewelry, they typically resell for less than retail price. Lab grown diamonds are newer to the market, and as production costs continue to fall, resale values have generally been declining alongside new retail prices. If long-term resale value is a real priority for you, that's worth factoring in. That said, most diamonds, lab grown or natural, are bought to be worn and kept rather than resold.
What about ethical and environmental considerations?
This is a genuinely debated area, and reasonable people land in different places. Mining natural diamonds has historically raised labor and conflict concerns, though industry certification systems like the Kimberley Process were created specifically to address conflict diamonds, and many natural diamonds today come from well-regulated, traceable sources. Lab grown diamonds avoid mining entirely, but the growth process is energy-intensive, and its environmental footprint depends heavily on the energy source powering the facility. Neither option is automatically the more responsible choice; it depends on the specific supplier and, for lab grown, the specific facility.
