Every diamond on earth is graded on the same four characteristics: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Most jewelers stop at defining them. We would rather tell you how to use them, including where spending more is worth it and where it quietly is not.

The grades below are exactly what you will find on the GIA and IGI certificate that comes with the diamond you choose, so you can read your own report like a professional.

The 1st C

Cut: the one that matters most

Cut measures how precisely a diamond's facets are angled and proportioned to return light to your eye. It is the single biggest driver of sparkle, and it is the only C created by human craftsmanship rather than nature.

Where to spend: An Excellent or Ideal cut makes a diamond look brighter, whiter, and even larger than its grades suggest. A poorly cut diamond wastes everything else you paid for. We do not recommend going below Very Good on any stone.
The 2nd C

Color: graded D to Z

Color measures how close a diamond is to colorless. The scale starts at D, completely colorless, and runs to Z, a visible light yellow or brown. The differences between neighboring grades are so subtle that they are judged by trained graders under controlled lighting.

The smart buy depends on the diamond. In lab grown, the step up to truly colorless D through F is small, so go high, it is why our own diamond studs are F color. In natural diamonds, F through H faces up white to the naked eye, so you get the colorless look without paying the D premium. In yellow or rose gold settings, the metal's warmth gives you extra room either way.
The 3rd C

Clarity: what only a microscope can see

Clarity grades the tiny internal characteristics, called inclusions, that form as a diamond grows. The scale runs from Flawless down to Included, and almost the entire scale describes things you cannot see without magnification.

The smart buy depends on the diamond. In lab grown, clarity premiums are small, so go VS2 or better and get a stone that stays clean even under magnification. In natural diamonds, SI1 is the smart floor: eye-clean in most stones at a real saving, and at our pricing the step up from SI to VS is smaller than most retailers make it if you want the headroom. The 4th C

Carat: weight, not size

Carat is the diamond's weight, measured to the hundredth. One carat equals 0.20 grams. Because weight sits in three dimensions, a 2 carat diamond does not look twice as big as a 1 carat, its face-up size is only about 25 percent wider.

The insider move: prices jump sharply at the round numbers, 1.00, 1.50, 2.00 carats. A 1.90 carat diamond looks identical to a 2.00 on the hand and can cost meaningfully less. Buying just under the magic number is the quietest saving in the diamond world.

Which C Matters Most?

If you want maximum sparkle

Prioritize cut above everything. An Excellent cut G color VS2 will outshine a poorly cut D Flawless every time.

If you want maximum size for your budget

The standard online advice is to drop color and clarity hard to afford size. At our pricing you rarely need to: hold cut at Excellent, keep color near colorless and clarity eye-clean, SI1 or better, and put the difference into carat weight. A bigger diamond is only a win if it is still a beautiful one.

If you are choosing lab grown

The same four grades apply, judged by the same laboratories. Because lab grown prices are lower per carat, many of our customers move up in both size and grade rather than choosing between them.
